Working on two very challenging images, the press and production crews at The Villages (Fla.) Daily Sun and Santa Fe New Mexican proved the excellence of their work by taking home the top awards in this year's Southern Lithoplate/Inland Press Association Print Quality Competition.
Contest judges selected the New Mexican as Best In Show in the black-and-white category, and the Daily Sun as Best In Show in the color category. The Best in Show winners in each category receive a $500 cash prize.
Newspapers were judged on how close the photographs published in their newspapers, during a regular press run, matched the proofs they were sent for the contest.
During the judging, held at Inland's Des Plaines, Illinois office, judges remarked that each photograph brought its own challenge to the competition. The black-and-white image-a photo of a motorcycle race-was highly detailed with subtle gradations of black and white. The color image-the façade of a building in Singapore's Chinatown-presented a different challenge with shades of red and figures dotting the building.
Entries were judged by Dennis Cheeseman, director of research and development for US Ink and Steve Johnson, founder and CEO of Copresco, a digital on-demand printing business in Carol Stream, Illinois.
